Calls for Action Against Climate Change

Last Sunday we gave out information about how to take action against climate change. Below is the information from the handout on ways to take action.

Calls for Action Against Climate Change

Here are ways to contact decision-makers to ask them to take action against climate change:

  1. Call Senator Diane Feinstein and ask her to vote against Scott Pruitt’s nomination as head of the EPA. Senator Feinstein, who, until her vote against Rex Tillerson’s appointment as Secretary of State, has voted to confirm every single one of Trump’s nominees, has yet to commit to voting against Scott Pruitt. (Senator Harris has already voiced her opposition to Scott Pruitt.)  Source:  League of Conservation Voters.
Senator Diane Feinstein – Phone number:  (202) 224-3841
Give your name, city and zip code so they know you are a constituent
Text:  “As a voter who cares deeply about protecting our access to safe drinking water, clean air, and addressing the realities of climate change, I’m calling to urge Senator Feinstein to vote to reject Steve Pruitt’s nomination for head of the EPA.”

  1. Call Senator Diane Feinstein and Senator Kamala Harris and ask them to support limits on methane pollution.    Environmental groups helped vote in the first-ever limits on dangerous methane pollution that the oil & gas industry is leaking, venting, and flaring on our public and tribal lands. Now members of the House have voted to block these standards that protect us from harmful methane. The Senate must vote not to block these limits.  Source:  Environmental Defense Fund.

Senator Kamala Harris – Phone number:  (202) 224-3553
Give your name, city and zip code so they know you are a constituent
Text:  “I’m asking Senator Feinstein/Harris to vote against any efforts to undermine the Bureau of Land Management’s limits on methane pollution.”

  1. Call Donald Trump and tell him you oppose reviving the Keystone XL pipeline and fast tracking the Dakota Access pipeline. President Trump just signed executive memoranda resurrecting the cancelled Keystone XL pipeline and rubber stamping the Dakota Access pipeline.  Source:  National Resources Defense Council.
Donald Trump – The White House – Phone number:  202-456-1111
Give your name, city, state and zip code so they know you are a constituent
Text (note: you can tone down the text if you’d like):  “I am outraged that Mr. Trump has issued executive memoranda clearing the way for the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines with no input from the American public. I urge him to reverse course on these dangerous and dirty fossil fuel projects.  These pipelines are not in our national interest and I, along with millions of others, will fight him every step of the way if his administration moves forward with them.”

  1. Sign up for weekly calls to action on a variety of topics. Over 65 million Americans rejected Donald Trump on Election Day. What if we came together every day to fight for our vision of a diverse, inclusive America? Together, we can use our voices to remind Congress that they work for all of us.  Source:  The 65

Dakota Access Pipeline

Last week Donald Trump told the US Army Corps of Engineers to stop their comprehensive environmental review of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This review moved one step closer to being scrapped as the Acting Secretary of the Army Corps directed the Corps to grant the final permit needed. It could happen any time now and construction could resume – unless we flood the Army Corps with comments telling them to continue their full environmental review of the pipeline. Source:  350.org

Protecting the oceans

The ocean produces more than half of the oxygen we breathe, and is a powerful force against climate change, absorbing half of all carbon dioxide we produce.  With its 14 overseas territories, the UK is responsible for the fifth largest areas of ocean in the world, measuring 6.8 million square km, over twice the size of India and nearly 30 times the size of the UK itself.  We are calling on the UK government to swiftly to implement marine protected areas around all of the UK’s Overseas Territories and to publish clear timelines and deadlines by which all these protected areas will be in place.  Source:  Global Citizen

Natural gas restrictions

President Obama’s climate legacy is under attack.  The House of Representatives is poised to undo an Obama administration rule that made natural gas companies pay for taking gas from public lands.  Fossil fuel companies often “flare” — or burn away — some of the natural gas they drill for. This pollutes our climate for no reason.  And until the Obama administration’s rule, fossil fuel companies got to do this for free — giving them no incentive to reduce the amount of natural gas they use.  By undoing the rule, the House is giving nearly $800 million to companies like ExxonMobil.  Tell your representative that you oppose attacks on President Obama’s climate legacy.
