This Week on the Peak

This Week on the Peak – Wednesday, February 8

This Week on the Peak
Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
February 8, 2017

Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel

What a joy it was to gather with so many of you last Saturday afternoon for Interfaith Harmony Day!  This fourth iteration of the event was by far our most attended, and Mission Peak UU members and friends had a lot to do with that.  I counted well over twenty of us as I watched everyone in their small groups. From what little snippets I heard, this was a very meaningful experience, just as I hoped it would be.

The group that helped organize this event, Try City Interfaith Council, has also decided to begin holding monthly “We Are One” Vigil and Rally from 5-6 PM on the fourth Thursday of every month at the corner of Paseo Padre and Walnut Ave in Fremont.   The first event will be held on Thursday, February 23 and I hope you can join us.

And if you dont have time to make a sign to bring, people have found that our “Love Your Neighbor” lawn signs work great, so pull it out of the ground and bring it with you.  And speaking of Yard Signs, we will soon have a new version to put out in front of our homes, here is a sneak peak:

These new signs should be available at Sunday service next week for a suggested donation of $12.

That is all for now.  Yours in the unfolding,

Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel
Minister of Mission Peak UU Congregation
Fremont, CA.
Cell: 510.936.1632

Preferred appointment times: Tue-Thur 11am-6pm

Sunday, February 5, 2017 - A Line Through Our Heart
Sunday, February 5, 2017 – A Line Through Our Heart
This Sunday’s Service:
One Song

The poet Rumi says “All religions, all this singing, one song, the differences are just illusion and vanity.” Some of us experienced that feeling last weekend at the Interfaith Harmony Day. That event was sponsored by the Tri-City Interfaith Council, the recipient of this year’s Courageous Love Hero award which we will present this Sunday. During the service Taunya Gren will offer a glimpse of the incredible video our “Syria” justice group has produced about a group helping Syrian refugees on the other side of the world. Please remember this is a second Sunday, and we will be donating our offering to Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, Inc.

Leading the service will be Allysson McDonald.  Music will be provided by Eric Niessner.

As a courtesy to fellow attendees, if you have an active cold, please consider wearing a protective mask.  Thank you!

Share the Plate for February

This
Sunday, February 12th, we will be welcoming Dick Mellinger from TVHC.

TVHC also has four WIC nutrition services locations, one of which is in Fremont; eight school-based mental health service sites, and one combined behavioral health-family support services site located in Hayward. To learn more, please go to Welcome to Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, inc.

If you are interested in donating to this organization, please come prepared to give generously. Checks can be made out to “TVHC” and any cash put in the basket will also go directly to them. If you are putting you pledge for MPUUC in the basket, please make a note of it on the check or envelope. Thank you!

Last month’s Share the Plate was collected for the UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee). Thanks to everyone who donated! We were able to collect $1,2669.20 on Sunday the 8th of January.  When we added up how much was matched by a matching grant, the grand total came to a whopping $2,069.20 given by our congregation! Thanks everyone!

If you have a local non profit that you think needs to be highlighted, please contact Natalie Campbell at nataliehcampbell@yahoo.com and she will try to get them on the calendar.

Information about the FUMC Event Center

The Methodists have been exploring ways to use the open space on the FUMC campus and last fall their congregation approved plans to build an Event Center on the eastern side of the property, approximately where our parking lot is right now.  During the process of deciding on an Event Center FUMC has solicited Mission Peak’s input and has been very intentional about considering our feedback and requests.  After the service on February 19, FUMC will be holding an information session about the Event Center for Mission Peak in Cole Hall, including specific location information and construction timetables.  Please come after the service on 2/19 to get more information and ask questions.  We are very appreciative that the Methodists are willing to come and discuss this project with us.  If you have any questions please contact Melissa Holmes at 510-299-2822.
Our Minister Emeritus’ Blog-post about the President

Commenting on his new blog-post, Chris writes: “I believe that many of the President’s policies and behaviors are incompatible with UU principles. I do not see this as a partisan issue, however. In fact I think our country has often benefited from give-and-take between competing political parties. So my comments are partly addressed to those who voted for the President, trying to help them see why so many people are appalled by this man. And I’d be appalled even if he were a Democrat or an independent!”

Chris welcomes feedback on his posting. See schrinerbooksandblogs.com.

Home Warming Coordinator Needed

For years Mission Peak UU Congregation has participated as a partner church in Abode’s home warming program. Partner churches provide funds to offset costs, such as security deposit or last months rent, and contribute household furnishings and other necessities to families Abode Services is re-housing. Home warming meetings take place near five corners in Fremont on a monthly basis.  Over the past couple of years Andrew Dean was our representative. In his absence we need a new representative to attend the monthly meetings and pass along information about needs to the congregation, and coordinate our contributions. Please contact Allysson McDonald at
allyssonmcdonald@gmail.com
if you can volunteer for this position so we can continue our participation in the program.
