Hello.  My name is Jen King. My wife and I have been members of Mission Peak since 2006.  Over the last 12 years I have participated in many aspects of Mission Peak.  Currently I’m the chair of the Black & White Gala, Chair of the Fellowship Committee, Co-Chair of the Sunday Services Team, a member of the Leadership Development Committee, a member of the Justice Council, and a Worship Associate.

Today I am writing to you as the Chair of the Fellowship Committee to talk to you (gasp) about something other than our fabulous Black & White Gala (you’ll find more information on that later on in the newsletter :-).  The Fellowship Committee is a new committee at Mission Peak.  Our Charter was approved by the Board in August.  Our role at Mission Peak is to plan and carry out fun events that bring us into closer fellowship with one another, with other UU’s, and with the larger community of which Mission Peak is a part.  The Fellowship Committee also acts as a resource for other committees and groups within our congregation when they want to plan an event.

Did you know that in 2019 Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation will celebrate its 25th Anniversary? Well, we will and we think that 25 years of fellowship, community, and social justice is something that should be celebrated.  I have been asked to put together a group to plan multiple events to celebrate this milestone.  We will be honoring our history,  celebrating joyfully in the present, and eagerly looking forward to and planning for the next 25 years.  All of this, of course, will take a bit of planning and coordination, but even that can be fun.  If you would like to be on the 25th Anniversary Celebration planning committee, please let me know (in person or via email) by November 25. Please also feel free to contact me with any questions or ideas that you may have about the celebrations. This is going to be FUN!!

 

 

November is Music Focus Month and we want to remind you that there is always room at the table for more music and more musicians.

At Mission Peak we have four parts to our music, Congregational Hymn singing, Choral singing on the first Sunday of most months, Peak Rocks on the third Sunday, and piano special music and accompaniment. Our services would be rather sterile without the joyful, somber, thoughtful, reverent and serene music we provide each Sunday.

You too can join in the fun while providing a valuable adjunct to the services. If you like to sing, even if you have no training, consider joining the choir. We spend time each month on singing techniques as well as learning our Anthems. Drew, Shauna or any other member of the choir would be happy to talk to you.

Or maybe you play the piano, or some other instrument, then Jay Steele would love to talk to you. Wouldn’t the interludes sound even better if they were piano duets or trios with string, brass or woodwinds? And, depending on the instrument, Peak Rocks might be interested as well.

Come by the music table after church and learn how you can join us in making beautiful music each Sunday morning.

Since 1993, Operation Dignity has been on the front lines of fighting homelessness in Alameda County, with a special focus on Veterans. They provide shelter, housing, street outreach, and supportive services to people experiencing homelessness. Last year they served more than 800 people, including some of the most vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in Alameda County. On Sunday, November 11, we will observe Veterans Day by donating the proceeds of our offering to this organization. Please bring cash or a check. Checks should be made out to Mission Peak UU Congregation. We will be making one donation from the Congregation after the offering is counted. If you are planning to pay on your MPUUC pledge, please make a note to that effect on the memo line – all other money will go to Operation Dignity, Inc. More information about them is available at

The Adult Education Committee is seeking proposals for classes for the Winter quarter – January through March of 2019. This is an opportunity for you to share what you know with others.

Past topics have included Buddhist meditation, healthy eating, art and spirituality, the Enneagram, Poems, communication skills, and celebration of the sacred feminine. Classes can vary from one-time events to meeting every week.

The day after the election right now is an unknown.  Rev Jo will be in her office during this time to either celebrate with everyone or to console those who may be disappointed.  This is a crucial election so I know that some have been affected greatly by its campaigns and results.  Feel free to join us this evening.
