A Few Words from Your Minister, in the Interim
MPUUC is picking up steam in the process of getting ready for your next minister! The work of the Transition Team, your Executive Team and the full Board of Trustees, our UUA regional consultants are all involved in their various ways in the process. We need you to engage whenever called upon to do so. The future of your community has to be important to you, right? So step up and step in!
And your church leaders, including myself, are doing all the work we are called to do to not only maintain the good programs, worship, pastoral care and more that make this place Mission Peak. So many of you give of yourselves for our common good. And we ask that others of you step up. We need new folks to step into follower and leadership roles to ensure the kind of strength and growth MPUUC needs.
Let’s keep on moving forward, together! See you on Sunday and on the next Sunday **and right after the service on the 21st** when Anne Hines, our UUA-PWR search consultant will be here for you!
A Message from Your DRE
Two events coming up you’ll want to know about and share with friends!
First, this Saturday night, January 13th, at 6 p.m., CaYRE will be hosting a free family movie night in Cole Hall. Snacks will be available for purchase, benefiting the Children and Youth Religious Education (CaYRE) Program.
Second, the 20’s and 30’s age group of members and friends will have their first monthly lunch on the fourth Sunday of January–that’s the 28th–after the service. Gather in Cole Hall, make a plan, go to lunch (see below for more info).
2018 Love Hero Award: Selection This Sunday!
The goal of this MPUUC award is to recognize love’s power to challenge exclusion, oppression and violence based on sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, race, religion, or any other identity. It is also an award that should speak to what this community is, what it wants to be and what it wants to be known for.
Your input for the selection of our 2018 Courageous Love Hero recipient is important. We’ll have a brief meeting after the service on Sunday, January 14 to decide from among our 5 nominees:
Arnav Gupta, a Youth Radio contributor who lives in Fremont. He has several segments to his credit, most notably one called “When Anonymity Hides Hatred,” about racism in his high school.
Mike Honda, former US Congressperson, continuing his work in retirement for justice. He has been a consistent supporter of adequate minimum wage, expansion of public health care, gay and lesbian rights, and has spoken of his transgender grandchild.
, longtime advocate/leader, recognized for her tireless efforts on the issue of gun control. (Read More

Anti-Racism Training: Niles Discovery Church, 36600 Niles Blvd, Fremont, CA
Saturday, February 24 2018 From 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Check-in: 8:30 AM)
Are you unsure what the difference is between racism and personal prejudice?
How racism is a system beyond individual choices? Why racism still grips the United States? And how we, as people of faith, can help dismantle it internally and socially?
If these questions interest you, plan on attending this workshop. You don’t have to have been trained before. All it requires is some time and an open heart and mind.
Registration is $40 with light breakfast and lunch included.

Check this out: The Voting Restoration & Democracy Act (VRDA) of 2018 would remove restrictions that prevent people in prison and on parole from voting in California. If the VRDA passes, California would join most developed countries (including Canada, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Japan) and two U.S. states (Maine and Vermont) in allowing people to vote from prison. New to UU Class
Welcome to friends of Mission Peak! We will have a New to Unitarian Universalism class on Sunday, January 14, from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Reverend Benson, together with other congregation leaders, will lead this class. The purpose of the class is for you to learn about the history of Unitarian Universalism, our Mission Peak Congregation, our congregational activities and more. Everyone interested in learning more about the UU faith is welcome to take the New to UU Class. In particular, anyone who is considering becoming a member of Mission Peak typically takes the class. We will provide a light lunch for the January 14 class, so please sign up at the Welcome Table or email Gayle Tupper at
Sunday Services Needed
Helping set up or take down for our services every
Sunday is one of the easiest ways to give back to the congregation and get involved. We currently have several spots that we desperately need volunteers for:
Sunday of the Month: Set-up (1 person needed), Greeter (2 people needed), and Take Down (1 person needed)
Sunday of the Month: Take Down (1 person needed)
Sunday of the Month: Aesthetics (1 person needed) and Take Down (1 person needed)
If you can’t commit to one
Sunday per month, please consider being a substitute so we won’t have as much trouble filling slots when our regular volunteers have to be out of town.
20’s and 30’s Lunch Social
Join us on January 28th at noon for a lunch social after the service. This is a great way to meet other UUs and to connect with like-minded people. We would like to create a space for people to connect with others
in the congregation who share the challenges and joys of being a young adult UU. We will primarily be a social networking group, but we would also like to explore participation in outreach activities and have events designed to support the spiritual needs of our members. Any young adult, married or single, is welcome to join.
