Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
January 31, 2018
This Sunday’s Service:
How do we love ourselves and bring out the best in one another? If you won’t be you, who will be?
Leading the service will be Rev. Benson. Assisting in the service is Worship Associate Ilze Duarte. Our Time for All Ages will be offered by DRE JeKaren Olaoya and music will be provided by Peak Performers.
During last week’s worship service, the congregation was encouraged to either write on the Timeline or talk with members of the Transition Team about past or current wounds that need healing. Many of you responded, and some significant hurts have been surfaced. We thank you for being open, honest, and vulnerable.
For those who have not yet done so, we again invite you to seek us out and share your concerns, even though it may be difficult to speak your truth. While we don’t expect to solve problems at this stage, we will listen confidentially and without judgment. Please also make a point of telling us about what’s going well: your joys, ideas, hopes, and dreams. We will collect themes to share with the Board and
Reverend Benson, so that issues can be appropriately addressed. This is an ongoing process. (
A Few Words…
Why do we gather? What is our purpose, as a religious community, eclectic as we are in our ideas about the nature of existence, the meaning of life, the what’s it all about? Sometimes I imagine you know what brings you to our service
on Sunday or other congregation events, committee meetings. I know sometimes your purpose in doing so is more clear than other times.
Success, in reality, must be measured by our genuine and reliable relationships, our sense of purpose and how we give back the good we can to the world in which we live. If how we relate to something bigger than our own more narrow lives is among our highest values in these different ways, then how do we grow our capacity in these areas of our lives?
Come, join us. Come
on Sunday, Then come again and again. In time you will find your path among us to growing who and how you are in this lifetime, in community.
Come, let’s lift up our highest values–the root of worship, after all–together!
– Rev Benson
A Message from Your DRE
One of the reasons the CaYRE committee and myself chose the Harry Potter curriculum for K-8 and Principled Music for 9-12 was the focus on social justice. We recognize as UUs how important it is to serve our communities on a micro and macro level (Our 7 principles are a great example of that). How do we keep the momentum going outside of the classroom
on Sunday? How do we know those lessons are being heard? How can families collectively work together for real social justice? These are just a few questions to think about between Sundays. I also invite you to check out
for more information on social justice for families.
The Following statement was developed by 5 members of the Tri-City Interfaith Council, your Interim Minister, Rev Benson, among them. Please read and share broadly:
TCIC Anti-Hate Statement
January 5, 2018
As a grassroots collection of people from many spiritual traditions, we want to clearly state that our faith traditions call us to recognize all people as equal and sacred. We reject racism, bigotry, and hatred. “read full statement here”
World InterFaith Harmony Day – Saturday, February 3 @ 1 pm, Niles Discovery Church, 36600 Niles Blvd, Fremont, CA.
In 2010 the United Nations established “World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all peoples regardless of their faith.” In that spirit we have organized a meet up where we can all talk about and share our faith traditions in the spirit of openness. You are welcome to bring ethnic finger food to share.

Are you unsure what the difference is between racism and personal prejudice?
How racism is a system beyond individual choices? Why racism still grips the United States? And how we, as people of faith, can help dismantle it internally and socially?
If these questions interest you, plan on attending this workshop. You don’t have to have been trained before. All it requires is some time and an open heart and mind.
Registration is $40 with light breakfast and lunch included.

Keep your representatives alerted to your views! Keep these names and numbers where you can refer to them at any time. There’s a new bill to be introduced in the House of Representatives to decriminalize marijuana. So many people are in prison, in some places for long prison sentences, even for small amounts of marijuana. Rep. Barbara Lee, Oakland, is one of the bill’s sponsors. Let your representatives know your thoughts. Let’s do all we can to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline!

Sunday Services Needed
Helping set up or take down for our services every
Sunday is one of the easiest ways to give back to the congregation and get involved. We currently have several spots that we DESPERATELY need volunteers for:
- 1st Sunday of the Month: Set-up (1 person needed), Greeter (2 people needed), and Take Down (1 person needed)
- 2nd Sunday of the Month: Take Down (1 person needed)
- 3rd Sunday of the Month: Aesthetics (1 person needed)
We also need more people to sign up to fill in for coffee subs.
If you can’t commit to one
Sunday per month, please consider being a substitute so we won’t have as much trouble filling slots when our regular volunteers have to be out of town.

Small Group Ministry Sign Ups Continue this Sunday
SGM are small, 8-10 people, groups which use discussion topics to expand their ministry. The groups are keep small to allow member to relate on a more intentional level and to be present with one another. SGM works to
increase the depth of relationship that comes from meeting over time, willingness and ability to listen without comment or advice, to learn from others, and to share from the soul. The topics work to focus on meaning and significance, rather than details, information or outcome.

20’s and 30’s Lunch Social
Join us on February 25th at noon for a lunch social after the service. This is a great way to meet other UUs and to connect with like-minded people. We would like to create a space for people to connect with others
in the congregation who share the challenges and joys of being a young adult UU. We will primarily be a social networking group, but we would also like to explore participation in outreach activities and have events designed to support the spiritual needs of our members. Any young adult, married or single, is welcome to join.
