This Week on the Peak

This Week on the Peak – Wednesday, March 22, 2017

This Week on the Peak
Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
March 22, 2017

Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel
As we enter spring and prepare to flip our calendars to April next week there is much going on at Mission Peak UU.  A new set of Adult RE classes are beginning, search committees have started meeting, and canvass is in full swing.
Some of you may have already been contacted by your canvass ambassador, as we are doing a one-on-one canvass this year, which means a team of our leaders have been trained to visit you and collect your pledge for the next fiscal year.  If you haven’t been contacted yet, don’t worry, you will be soon!
Also, this Sunday, following our service, we will hold a congregational meeting to decided if Mission Peak UU will call a one or two year Interim minister.  If you are able, I hope you will join us this Sunday and participate in this congregational process.  As always, the more voices the better!
I hope to see you there!

This Sunday’s Service:
UU Superheroes
The history of both our Unitarian and Universalist faith is littered with incredibly inspirational stories of people who changed history for the better, many of which are very relevant to our time. What if we honored these heroes like we do the ones we put on the back of Baseball cards and pay millions of dollars? Well, at least for this Sunday, we will!

Leading the service will be Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel and Worship Associate Mark Rahman.  Music will be
provided by Eric Niessner.

A Beacon of Hope. A Sanctuary in the Storm
Canvass Season has begun! You will be contacted by a member of the Canvass team in the next few weeks to set up a meeting time to discuss the future of our congregation. There are many changes happening in our community.  In fact, right after the service this coming Sunday, we will be taking a vote on whether we want a one year or a two year interim minister.  This sort of decision is just one of many that we will be making in the coming year. In order to make these decisions, we need to know where we stand with our budget.

Canvass season is the time to really think about the direction you would like MPUU to take. As our congregation moves in these new directions, we will need the funding to ensure that we can make the best choices for our community. We want to have options, and in order to be an enticing congregation for a new minister, we need to be fiscally secure.  We need everyone’s help to make this a reality. We are asking those who can, to give a bit more this year, to help keep Mission Peak going strong!

When you sit down and talk with your canvass representative this month, please keep all of this in mind. We appreciate your generosity.  Thank you.

Congregational Meeting March 26
With Jeremy’s departure from Mission Peak, part of the process to find a new minister is to hire an interim minister who will be here until we call a new settled minister. Per our Congregational By-Laws, the Congregation must vote on whether to hire an interim minister for 1 year or 2 years. This decision plays a very important role in how we will approach the process to find a settled minister. There will be a Congregational meeting on March 26, in two weeks, to vote on the length of the interim minister. Please plan to attend this meeting and help determine how we move forward with our ministerial search.
Apologies for the tiny printed numbers in the brochure!
It was a valuable lesson to find out that something that is readable on my computer may not be readable when printed on paper. I have reprinted the giving guide section of the brochure and “pulled out” those numbers into a text box next to each chart. So sorry for the confusion – and the eye strain!  (click here for giving guide)

DeAnna Alm, Canvass Co-Chair

Highlights from the March Board meeting:
  • The Board spoke with Jan Christian, our PCD liaison, about the Interim Minister search process.  She walked us through the process, including timelines and expectations.  We also talked a little bit about the Settled Minister search process, including the role of a Transitions Coach from the UUA and the benefits to having one.  After the discussion with Jan the Board officially voted to hire an Interim Minister and also voted to hire a Transitions Coach.
  • We received an update on the DRE search.  The Search Committee has listed the position in numerous places and has received a few promising applications.
  • The Ministry Council has coordinated with the Fremont Chamber of Commerce to participate in Earth Day 2017 on
April 22 at Washington Hospital.  We will hand out the posters that Beckett Gladney made to highlight climate change issues and there will be a craft for children.  More information to come!
  • Because of tasks associated with the DRE and Interim Minister Searches, the Board will be meeting in April.  With the new Council governance format, April was originally scheduled for Council meetings, and not a Board meeting.  The April Board meeting will be on
April 11 at 7 pm at Michealle Havenhill’s house.
You may contact any Board member for additional information.
Baseball Sunday Fundraiser
This year our annual Baseball
Sunday celebration will be
Sunday, June 18 which is also Father’s Day.  What better way to celebrate than an afternoon at a baseball game?  We will be heading south this year to see the San Jose Giants play the Visalia Rawhide at
1:00 pm. And it’s not just a fun baseball afternoon, it’s also a chance to support Mission Peak!! We’re making this event a fundraiser and for each $12 ticket we sell we get to keep $5. What could be easier? So invite all your friends and family for a fun, family friendly afternoon at the ballpark and support Mission Peak at the same time.  We have an initial lot of 75 tickets, but can get more if we sell out.  Jen King will have tickets available most Sundays, but is also willing to mail out tickets.  Please make all checks out to MPUUC.  If you have any questions or want to order tickets, please contact Jen King at 510-299-2825.
Trans Day of Visibility, South Bay

There are marches being planned across the United States and internationally. In the Bay Area there marches will take place in San Francisco, Livermore, and San Jose on
Saturday, April 22. If you are interested in joining other Mission Peak members and friends, Meredith Miller is the coordinator for Mission Peak members and friends who want to go to Science March in San Jose together.  Meredith can be reached at (510) 301-6382.  For more info.

Congregational Justice Action Meeting

Shortly after the election we sat down together and brainstormed simple things we could do to make a difference over the winter months. Look what we’ve accomplished! Join us after the service on
Sunday, April 2, for another brainstorming session for actions we can take throughout the spring!

Climate Action March

Climate activists have announced a major ”
People’s Climate March
” on
April 29th
in Washington, D.C. and throughout the country to fight back against President Trump’s proposals to reverse climate action and dismantle the EPA. Sister marches will be taking place locally at
10am in San Jose and 12pm in Oakland.  Please contact Allysson McDonald if you would like to coordinate a group to travel together to one of the local marches.
