Common Read
Each year, the Unitarian Universalist Association selects “A Common Read” for the year. For 2020, it is An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz (2015). December 2020 will be the 400th anniversary of the much-mythologized encounter at Plymouth, Massachusetts, between English colonists and those native to the land. An Indigenous Peoples’ History presents truths that contradict the mythology and invites us to learn the First Americans’ story of trauma and resilience.
A Common Read invites participants to read and discuss the same book in a given period of time. At Mission Peak UU, this is typically in the autumn. The Common Read can build community in our congregation and our movement by giving diverse people a shared experience, shared language, and a basis for deep, meaningful conversations. You do not need to be a member of our congregation to participate in the discussion!
