This Week on the Peak
Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
June 28, 2017

My name is Alan Davis, and I am one of your newly elected board members. I am one of the founding members of the congregation, as is my wife Sharon. I have served on the board before, including as president. Most of you, even newcomers, will have seen me making coffee, as I have done ever since I joined. I have also served on some committees and am currently on Pastoral Associates.
I was raised a Presbyterian, and went so far as to complete theological seminary in 1975, so that I became qualified to become a minister. I was much more comfortable and productive as a software engineer, however, from which I have recently retired. I became a UU after Sharon and I married, and have been a member of two congregations on the East Coast before coming to Fremont. We adopted two daughters from India, who are now adults. We have three grandchildren.

It will be an interesting time to be part of the deliberations about the coming transition. There is an expectation with an interim minister that we are likely to try out some changes to see what we like. These may be in the worship service, social gatherings, committee activities or community involvement. I don’t come to the board with any particular changes that I want to see, but I would be interested to hear what any of our members and friends would like.

This Sunday’s Service:
Patriotism in the Age of Trump
John Buehrens is the Senior Minister of the First UU Society of San Francisco. He is retiring from that post at the end of July after 45 years as a UU minister. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School, he served congregations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, and New York City before becoming UUA President from 1993 to 2001. He is the author or co-author of five books about liberal religion, and is presently at work on a sixth, a re-interpretation of Transcendentalist movement.

Leading the service will be Rev.
John Buehrens and Worship Associate Megan McMillen.  Music will be provided by Jay Steele.

The Weekly Wave through the years
A Final Good Bye
Well, my final service was certainly memorable.  To everyone who participated in the decommissioning ritual, to those brave and hardy souls that stuck out a few innings of molten hot baseball, to all of you who have shared kind words and memories over these final days, I send my gratitude and love.

At
the end of this week I will be
 officially
disconnecting
myself from the email address and phone number associated with my ministry at Mission Peak UU.  For the month of July and most of the month of August Rev. Barbara Meyers will be handling any pastoral care needs that arise, and all other matters should be directed to incoming board President Michealle Havenhill.

Many of you have asked me about our Facebook connection and what this transition would mean for that.  I had hoped to be able to keep all of my Mission Peak UU friends on an embargoed list that I could then reactive in two years, but it turns out this will not allow me to post anything public during that time, which will not work.  I am sorry to say that this means I will have to “unfriend” you on Facebook.  Please know this feels as terrible to me as it does to you.  At the same time, I completely respect the covenant I have agreed to with my fellow Ministers, and this is a part of that agreement.  And while I bristle at its imperfection, I respect the wisdom that has gone into it. I hope you will join me in accepting this and look forward to re-connecting on social media in two years time.

It has been a life-changing honor to serve all of you at Mission Peak UU.  I can’t even imagine all the ways I will carry this experience forward with me into the rest of my life.  Blessings to you all.

Peace,

Rev. Jeremy D. Nickel
We Need More Campers!!!
We need more of you to join us for our annual camping trip!! This year we will be camping
July 28-30 at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Glen Ellen.  If you are new to camping or this is your first time camping with kids – this is a great way to give it a try.  We’ve got veteran campers with lots of gear to loan and it’s always easier to camp with others and share the set-up, take down, cooking, and clean-up duties.  It’s a beautiful location (wine country anyone?) and a ton of fun.  We just need more people to sign up.  Feel free to bring family and friends with you.  Dogs are allowed.  The cost is $10 per person or $25 per family.  If cost is an issue we can work around it.  If you’re interested in signing up or have any questions, please find Jen King after the service on
July 9 or 23 or contact her at 510-299-2825 or
jenking@alumnae.mtholyoke.edu.
