Hello from your community minister. I hope you are enjoying your summer. So far the highlight of my summer has been attending the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly (GA) in New Orleans in June. This
coming Sunday I will be leading the worship service on my experience at GA. All of the music, the children’s story, and other parts of the liturgy will be from General Assembly. I hope you can come and get a flavor of what this special denomination is doing at this singular moment in its life after so many high-level leaders have left and a newly-embraced focus on countering oppression.
In New Orleans, I had the good fortune of staying with another UU minister and her jazz musician husband in a house that had 8 feet of water inside after hurricane Katrina, so I got a very good introduction to a city and way of life that I had never experienced before. In fact the Convention Center where GA was held was hallowed ground, for it was there that many people were evacuated during the hurricane, and where many people died.
I have never been so sure of our unique position in the denomination’s history and more hopeful for its future.
See you on Sunday!
Rev. Barbara F. Meyers
Mental Health Community Minister

We Need More Campers!!!
We need more of you to join us for our annual camping trip!! This year we will be camping
July 28-30 at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Glen Ellen. If you are new to camping or this is your first time camping with kids – this is a great way to give it a try. We’ve got veteran campers with lots of gear to loan and it’s always easier to camp with others and share the set-up, take down, cooking, and clean-up duties. It’s a beautiful location (wine country anyone?) and a ton of fun. We just need more people to sign up. Feel free to bring family and friends with you. Dogs are allowed. The cost is $10 per person or $25 per family. If cost is an issue we can work around it. If you’re interested in signing up or have any questions, please find Jen King after the service on July 23 or contact her at 510-299-2825 or
jenking@alumnae.mtholyoke.edu.
