Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
September 13, 2017

|
My name is Steve Wallcave. My wife Kathy and I have been members since Mission Peak UU started in 1994. Mission Peak has been an important part of my life because it helps me think about what is important in life. I also think that Mission Peak was an important part of our children’s education. Sarah and Joseph are now adults but they went to religious education classes, as well as participating in the Coming of Age program and the Our Whole Lives sexuality education program before they went off to college.
This school year, I am happy to be on the team of teachers of the Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for 7th-9th Grade youth. OWL equips youth with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas:
human development
relationships
personal skills
sexual behavior
sexual health
society and culture
As well as offering the class to our congregation’s youth, we are opening up the class to community members who are interested. If you know any local 7th-9th graders who you thing would be interested, share this link with them
https://mpuuc.org/sexuality-education-7th-9th-grade-youth/ or ask me for a brochure.
Be well,
Steve

It’s been sixteen years since the “9/11” attacks. We mustn’t forget.
Those among us who were alive when John Kennedy was shot and killed know where they were when they got the news. And before that, there was Emmett Till. Did most of us even know? And after that, Malcolm. And Viola Liuzzo. James Reeb, Martin, Bobby, too many to name here.
We mustn’t, we can’t forget. “9/11” wasn’t the beginning of it all. It was a marker in our lives because it changed our sense of safety. For millions here and across the globe, it changed everything.
At the root of all of it: racism, classism, an us-them, my-people-are-good-and-you-and-your-people-
are-the-enemy-approach to life.We mustn’t tolerate it, not in others, not in ourselves. This requires hard work on all our parts. We cannot change an ethos of hate without reaching beyond our circles of comfort and getting to know people different from ourselves, without debunking in our own hearts and minds any myths and biases we still cling to. Conscious and unconscious bias, judgment, even hate–we cannot let stand.
What work will we be about to change this circumstance in our own lives?
Good morning, Mission Peak! Good morning, Fremont! Good morning, Americas! Good morning, World! Rise and shine! Rise. And. Shine!
Hope is not idle… -Rev Benson

This Sunday’s Service:
A Time for Everything
Light switch on. Light switch off. Not much about human relationship is that simple. And even turning the lights on and off, that isn’t so simple if you look at the whole system inside that switchbox, down the line in the building, out into the street and to the source. How do we know about relationship?
Leading the service will be Rev. Benson and Worship Associate Sharon Davis. Music will be provided by Peak Rocks.

Share the Plate for September
On Sunday, September 10th, we were welcomed by Tori Bommerito from Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. Habitat operates around the world to build, renovate and repair affordable houses. Recently they started construction on Central Commons, a 30-home development that will give low-income families the opportunity to own their own home in Fremont.
We raised over $600 for this worthy organization, however the notice about Share the Plate did not make it into last week’s Week on the Peak, so not everyone was prepared to donate. If you would still like to contribute, you may send a check to Habitat EBSV, 2619 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612. Thank you!

The Black & White Gala, Mission Peak’s social (and fundraising) event of the year, is November 4th – Which is closer than you think. The evening consists of a live auction, a boutique, a basket raffle, and yummy refreshments (a dessert buffet, beer & wine, and non-alcoholic beverages). Attendees are encouraged to wear black and white – as formal or casual or crazy as you’d like. This year’s theme will be “Puttin’ On the Ritz” and the event will be held at the Dominican Center located just up Washington Blvd from Cole Hall at the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose Motherhouse. The event will start at 6:00 pm and run until about 9:30 pm. Tickets are $25 each or you can purchase a table of 5 for $100. We encourage you to invite friends (but only if they bring their checkbook!). Childcare will be provided at our very own Cole Hall for $5 per child. A table where you can purchase tickets and sign up for donations and volunteer opportunities, will be set up outside Cole Hall during coffee hour every Sunday through the end of October. Please stop by and buy your tickets and find out how you can participate in the fun, frolic, and fundraising that is the Black & White Gala. We can’t do it without YOU!!.

About Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley
We believe that everyone deserves a decent place to live. We create opportunities for families to transform their lives, gaining the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build a better future. Working together as a community, we build homes with affordable mortgages, repair and rehabilitate existing homes, counsel first-time homebuyers, and revitalize neighborhoods in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara counties. Today, Habitat, new homeowners, and community members are teaming up to build 30 new condominium homes in central Fremont.
About volunteering
Join a multi-faith crew of volunteers in the East Bay to build affordable homes with Habitat locally. First-timers and experienced builders welcome, ages 16 and up, on Saturday, Nov. 18th. All materials, supplies, and instruction will be provided. Please plan to bring a water bottle, lunch, and team spirit. Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund
With Hurricane Irma-the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded-barreling across Florida after devastating parts of the Caribbean, there is likely to be significant damage similar to what Hurricane Harvey inflicted. We know that long after the initial clean-up, real recovery can take months or years.
The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) stands with its congregations which have been impacted by natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
The UUA has established a Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund to assist congregations in repairing any damage, and to respond to the needs of their members’ and their community’s efforts to get back on its feet.
UUA staff is working closely with leaders in the Association’s Southern Region, to ascertain where the need is greatest and distribute funds efficiently.
You may also direct checks to UUA Gift Processing, 24 Farnsworth St Fl 3, Boston, MA 02210; please make your check payable to the UUA with “Irma Recovery Fund” on the memo line. Follow along on UUA social media to stay up to date as the situation develops.
We are heartened by the generous response we have already received for Hurricane Harvey Recovery. Contributions to the Harvey Recovery Fund can still be made at giving.uua.org/harvey-floods.
Thank you for your contributions.
