This Week on the Peak
Mission Peak UU – Fremont, CA
The Home of Liberal Religion in the Tri-Cities and Beyond!
October 11, 2017

Welcome everyone. My name is Shyno Chacko Pandeya and I am a member of Mission Peak UU.
This is an exciting time to be at MPUUC. We have many fun events coming up and lots of ways you can engage with the community.
Kid-Friendly
If you are a parent or like to spend time with children, we have many opportunities for you to interact with our kids. Our Religious Education program is always looking for educators. You don’t need to have prior experience. We will train you and our amazing Director of Religious Education JeKaren Olaoya is available to assist you. Contact
dre@mpuuc.org
Gardeners/Outdoor types
If you like to spend time outdoors, we have two gardens in need of volunteers. The MPUUC garden on-site is managed by Valerie Stewart and her team. Much of the fresh produce available on the table after service is from this garden.

MPUUC also participates in the Stone Garden, a large community garden at the corner of Mission and Mowry. The Stone Garden provides over 3000lbs of organic produce to the Tri-City Food bank every year. If you are interested in volunteering, contact me.
Marketers/Social Media/Writers
If you enjoy writing, sharing content on social media or developing marketing material, we also have options for you. Please contact the marketing/communications group at
marketing@mpuuc.org
Northern California Wildfires

Thank you and see you on Sunday!

$464 for Leaf!
This Second
Sunday we collected $464 during our service for Leaf.  If you want to donate more as they expand their garden into a farm (!) send a check and in the memo line indicate “member of Mission Peak UU Congregation”.

Here is a thank you note from Mia:

Today I retrieved your congregation’s generous donation of $464 from Shyno. It means so much to me and LEAF’s Board to have the support of the MPUUC. The congregation has played a huge role in the success of the C.R. Stone Garden, turning a long-neglected plot of land into a vibrant garden and continuing that support by donating and volunteering over the past three years of the garden’s infancy.

As Bruce Cates probably explained
on Sunday, the vegetables grown at the garden are in turn donated to the Tri-City Volunteers Food Bank to feed approximately 1,000 families every week, 88% of whom are ‘extremely low income’ according to TCV. It takes a village to feed a village!

Allysson, I appreciate your dedication to enlisting volunteers as well as donations. Shyno and I spoke today about pairing the names that surfaced this past weekend with meaningful participation. Until LEAF locates someone to coordinate volunteers, please continue to send those who are interested in hands-on gardening to Shyno, or to me if they prefer computer-related tasks or coordination. The latter sounds a tad boring, but we’re working on some pretty exciting stuff!

Thank you so much,

Dumbledore’s Army Fights the Illiteracy Horcrux
Last chance:  Donate new and gently used books for all ages to our book drive for the Friends of the Library Little Library Program. Books must be donated by Sunday October 15. To donate books bring them on Sunday and look for the donation box or ask the DRE where they go.

The K-4th grade and the 5-8th grade Religious education classes are using the “Harry and UU” curriculum which uses the symbol of overcoming a Horcrux as reason for the children to engage in a social action project. See
https://mpuuc.org/learning-overview/children-and-youth/ for more information on the curriculum.
Are You Ready to Build?
Our second Sunday collection in September went to help Habitat for Humanity with their Fremont build. On November 18 we actually have an opportunity to do some physical labor at the site. We have space for only 10 volunteers, so sign up soon! Everyone who wants to help must register and fill out a waiver. The registration page for our  build day on November 18 is ready to go!  Please personally sign up online to complete your registration at http://vhub.at/mpuuc
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for set-up & tear down for the Affordable Housing Forum II meeting on October 22.  Please contact Mari-Lyn Harris if you can help.

Black & White Gala – We Need Your Help!!
Jen King will be at her usual spot after church every
Sunday in October so you can sign-up to help, make donations, and buy tickets.  However, there are a few very specific requests that we have right now:

Do you have a “Square” reader?  Would you be willing to put the app on your phone and help us after the auction on the night of the event?  We need people to help with check-out and we need those people to be able to accept credit/debit cards.  Please let us know if you are willing and able to help with this.

We need someone to
Organize Childcare – You don’t have to hire the childcare workers – we’ve got that covered.  We just need someone to: purchase snacks for the kids in childcare (you will be reimbursed), plan a few activities for the kids who will be attending childcare during the Gala, open up Cole Hall and get things set up for childcare, and then clean up afterwards and lock up.  This could be done by one person or 2 or 3.

We need someone to be in charge of the
Basket Raffle on the day of the Gala.  You don’t need to organize or collect the baskets – we’ll take care of that.  We just need someone to: set up the baskets at the Gala, organize and train the Raffle ticket sellers, and be in charge of the actual Basket Raffle after the Auction.

We need more items for the boutique!  Hand crafted items are best.  Items that have specific meaning for UU’s, items that would make great holiday teacher gifts, items that are good for stocking stuffers, … You don’t have to have multiple dozens of each item, 3 or more of something is fine.

Please contact Jen King ASAP if you are willing to help with any of these specific needs or have any questions.

Thanks!!
