This Sunday’s Service:
No Room for Anger When We Act
In doing the work of turning love into justice, anger may precipitate a burst of energy we mistake for the moment to act. So how do we use and step back from anger in order to act powerfully in the world?

Leading the service will be Rev. Benson.  Assisting in the service is Worship Associate Megan McMillen. Our Time for All Ages will be offered by DRE JeKaren Olaoya and music will be provided by Eric Niessner.
***Congregation-wide gathering with our Pacific Western Region search consultant, Anne Hines, ***
Sunday, January 21, after the service. She will present information about the search process. Lunch will be provided! Childcare too!

A Few More Words: Progress in the Interim

Interim ministry isn’t an exact science as I know you know! For the uninitiated, the general goals of the interim period are for you, the congregation, to work through:
  1. Claiming and honoring the past and healing its grief and conflicts. Coming to terms with history.
  2. Illuminating the congregation’s unique identity, its strengths, its needs, and its challenges. Discovering a new identity.
  3. Clarifying the multiple dimensions of leadership, both ordained and lay, and navigating the shifts in leadership that accompany times of transition. Allowing leadership to emerge.
  4. Renewing connections with available resources within and beyond the UUA. Renewing denominational linkages.
  5. Enabling the congregation to renew its vision, strengthen its stewardship, prepare for new professional leadership and engage its future with anticipation and zest. Committing to new directions in ministry. (Read More)

Check this out: The Voting Restoration & Democracy Act (VRDA) of 2018 would remove restrictions that prevent people in prison and on parole from voting in California. If the VRDA passes, California would join most developed countries (including Canada, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Japan) and two U.S. states (Maine and Vermont) in allowing people to vote from prison. Keep your representatives alerted to your views! Keep these names and numbers where you can refer to them at any time. There’s a new bill to be introduced in the House of Representatives to decriminalize marijuana. So many people are in prison, in some places for long prison sentences, even for small amounts of marijuana.  Rep. Barbara Lee, Oakland, is one of the bill’s sponsors.  Let your representatives know your thoughts.  Let’s do all we can to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline!

Small Group Ministry Sign Ups Start this Sunday
SGM are small, 8-10 people, groups which use discussion topics to expand their ministry.  The groups are keep small to allow member to relate on a more intentional level and to be present with one another.  SGM works to
increase the depth of relationship that comes from meeting over time, willingness and ability to listen without comment or advice, to learn from others, and to share from the soul.  The topics work to focus on meaning and significance, rather than details, information or outcome.

20’s and 30’s Lunch Social
Join us on January 28th at noon for a lunch social after the service. This is a great way to meet other UUs and to connect with like-minded people. We would like to create a space for people to connect with others
in the congregation who share the challenges and joys of being a young adult UU.  We will primarily be a social networking group, but we would also like to explore participation in outreach activities and have events designed to support the spiritual needs of our members.  Any young adult, married or single, is welcome to join.
