Almost as soon as settlers arrived on these shores, claims were being made on all the resources it possessed. The plants and trees… the animals… the water… the air… Collectively, we have approached inhabitation by taking the passage in Genesis very seriously: “and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” What if we actually took Chief Seattle’s advice and treated everything as partners instead of commodities?
