This Sunday’s Service:
The Tales of a Social Addict
We all have powerful biological drives that shape our behavior whether it is a focus on safety and security, a need to belong to a social group, or to maintain relationships with others. In this sermon I will discuss how these powerful biological drives can become an obsession and how to maintain balance.

 

 

Michealle Havenhill will lead the service and assisting will be Worship Associate Jen King.  Jay Steele will provide our music.

Children & Youth Religious Education (CaYRE)

RE has been having a fun summer! Thank you to everyone who has volunteered!  We still need a few more teachers and assistants for August.  Please look for the sign up this Sunday or email

We are also currently searching for a new RE Coordinator.  You can find our job listing at
mpuuc.org/dresearch. Please pass it along to anyone who may be interested.
Joys and Concerns

Several of you have talked to the Worship Associates about your concern that the flames from our candles of joys and concerns were too close to the fabric decorating the pulpit.
Some of use on the Worship Associates Committee share this concern and also wonder about using candles and discarding the stubs every week. So, we consulted with Paul Davis,

 

President of the Board, and he agreed that we should try a different ritual for our Joys and Concerns. We will do so on a trial basis. In about three months we will ask you what you think and will make a final decision.
We will try this: we will invite you to form two lines, as usual, and take turns, one person
from the front of each line at a time. You will take one or more stones from a bowl and place
it/them on the sand. We will be creating a sand garden-or a stone garden, if you will-with
tokens of our joys and concerns. The musician will be playing some music, as usual. Please
share your reactions to the new ritual by writing them in the worship diary or contacting the
worship leader after the service.

Sunday Services NEEDS your help.  Thank you to those members who have recently stepped in to help.  We still need help with the following tasks:
–
Coffee Set-Up & Take Down (we will provide training and detailed instructions) – The 1st
Sunday of each month is currently vacant.
–
Goodies (they don’t need to be homemade…they just need to exist) – The 2nd & 3rd
Sunday of each month need additional volunteers.
–
Take-Down (putting away the chairs, hymnals, etc. after services – we will provide training and instructions) – The 1st & 2nd
Sunday of each month need additional volunteers.
You can sign up on an ongoing basis for the
Sunday’s indicated above by contacting Jen King, or you can sign up (especially over the summer) on an ad hoc basis by following this link:

Mission Peak Justice Corner – Allysson McDonald

 

At its July meeting the MPUUC Board agreed to a restructuring of our councils, which includes the creation of a “Justice Council.” The first meeting of this new council will happen in the next couple of months – keep an eye here for an invitation to attend! The UU General Assembly (GA) in Kansas City, in July, voted on three Actions of Immediate Witness:
1: Immigration:

Dismantle Predatory Medical Care Practices in Prisons and End Prisons for Profit. Click the link for details. In California proposed bill
SB 1393 would amend Penal Code Sections 667 and 1385 to restore the court’s discretion, in the interest of justice and at the time of sentencing, to strike sentence enhancements for prior serious felony convictions, when a person is currently charged with a serious felony.
