THE TRANSCENDENTALISTS: New Views

A Talk by John Buehrens, author of Universalists and Unitarians in America, A People’s History and of the forthcoming book, Transcendentalist Disciples

Many of us meet the Transcendentalists in high school or college literature classes, through Emerson and Thoreau and few others. We forget that Transcendentalism was first of all a movement for spiritual and moral renewal in the Unitarian churches of the time. Its transforming effect helped to fuel the anti-slavery movement, the women’s rights movement, the growth of public education, and the awareness that moral and spiritual insight transcends cultural boundaries. John Buehrens will introduce us to the dramatic stories of some Transcendentalists we may never have heard of, more urban than Concord-based, and more activist than mystical.
